How to Find Your Home’s Main Water Valve

A water valve is an essential part of your home’s plumbing system, yet many homeowners don’t know where it is or how to use it properly. Here’s how to find your home’s main water valve and why you should learn how to use it.

The main water shut-off valve can be tricky to find.

Most water appliances, including sinks, washers, and toilets, come equipped with small valves near the water supply. Should one of these appliances malfunction, you can just shut off the small water valve and call your plumber. It’s fine to use other water appliances in your home while you wait for service.

Should something major happen, say a pipe burst or sewage backup, then you’ll need to turn off the primary water supply to your home. If you don’t know where your main water shut-off valve is, now is the time to find it. In an emergency, you may need to turn off the water to your home quickly, and the last thing you want is to scramble around looking for the right valve.

Here’s a quick guide to help you locate it:

In a warm climate, like South Carolina, municipal water valves are usually located outside. It could be hidden behind a plastic access panel so keep looking if it’s not easy to spot right away. Should you have a private water supply, however, you have a little more searching to do. Start at the lowest possible point.

The main water valve may be in your basement.

What if you don’t have a basement? Check the crawl space or a closet built against an exterior wall.

The location of it could vary depending on when your home was built.

If your home was built before 1950, the main valve could be in the basement near the water meter. If your home was built between 1950 and 1970, it may be found in a utility closet on an exterior wall. For homes built after 1970, it’s more likely to be in the garage near the water heater.

What if your home is brand new?

If you live in a brand-spanking new home, here’s a quick guide to finding your main water valve

1) Head outside and turn off the outdoor faucet (if applicable).

2) Follow any pipes running from the outdoor faucet back to your house.

3) Locate the furthest point inside your house from that outdoor faucet, and that point should be where you can find your main water valve (it should also have a hose hookup on top).

If you can’t find it in this area, then try looking in other places like an unfinished basement or garage.

Another tip is to locate your water meter — the main water shut-off valve could be located near it. If you can’t find the shut-off valve after going through these tips, the best thing to do would be to call your city’s water department for assistance.
